19세기 후반 영화가 스펙터클한 공연에 익숙한 관객을 사로잡기 위한 새로운 오락 형태—어트랙션—로 발전했다는 통상적 설명을 제쳐두고, 본 강연은 영화가 이 시기에 추출된 자원의 산업적 규모 통합에 의존하는 환경 시뮬레이션 및 자원 관리 시스템으로 등장했다고 주장한다. 여기서는 1910년대 중반 영화사들이 통합한 자원, 그리고 자원 추출이 스튜디오 제작 영화를  반영하는 주제가 된 방식을 집중 조명한다.
이 책에서 나는 점차 익숙해지고 있는 미디어 역사에 대해 물질주의적 접근을 확장하면서도 그 한계를 추궁한다. 미디어의 물질적 역사에 대한 우리의 확장된 지식이 그 재료들이 제작에 필요했던 영화들을 분석하는 데 어떻게 활용될 수 있는가? 영화 텍스트와 그 창작의 맥락 및 묘사된 대상 사이를 형식적으로 읽어나가며, 나는 추출과 자원 의존의 역사를 고려하되 물질적 지식—내가 “날것의 물질주의(raw materialism)”라 부르는 것—을 그 자체로 목적이 되게 하지 않는 영화 분석 접근법을 제안한다. 오히려 나는 그러한 지식이 영화미디어학 및 관련 분야가 오랫동안 투자해 온 형식 문제와, 물질적 역사와 그 이해관계에 의해 새롭게 재구성된 형식 분석의 접근과 다시 연결되어야 한다고 주장한다.

Setting aside the standard account of cinema’s development in the late nineteenth century as a new kind of entertainment—an attraction—designed to appeal to audiences attuned to spectacular performance, in this talk I argue that cinema emerged in these years as a system of environmental simulation and resource management that depended on the industrial-scale integration of extracted materials. Here I focus on the resources film companies consolidated in the mid-1910s and how resource extraction became a reflexive subject of their studio-produced film worlds.
In The Cinema of Extractions, I expand on what is becoming an increasingly familiar materialist approach to media history, but I also press on that approach’s limits. How, I ask in the book and this talk, can our expanding knowledge of media’s material histories be used to analyze the films those materials were needed to make? Reading formally between film texts and the contexts of their creation and their depicted subjects, I call for an approach to film analysis that accounts for histories of extraction and resource dependence but without taking material knowledge—what I call “raw materialism”—as an end in itself. Instead, I argue that such knowledge should be reconnected with Film and Media Studies’ and related fields’ longstanding investment in questions of form and an approach to formal analysis renewed by material histories and their stakes.

Brian R. Jacobson is Professor of Visual Culture at the California Institute of Technology. He is the author of The Cinema of Extractions: Film Materials and Their Forms (Columbia University Press, 2025) and Studios Before the System: Architecture, Technology, and the Emergence of Cinematic Space (Columbia University Press, 2015) and editor of In the Studio: Visual Creation and Its Material Environments (University of California Press, 2020), winner of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies award for Best Edited Collection and the Limina Prize for Best International Film Studies Book. With James Leo Cahill and Weihong Bao, he edited “Media Climates,” the Winter 2021 issue of Representations.
