영화미디어학에서 서스펜스에 대한 접근 방식은 플롯과 캐릭터에서 더 나아가지 않고 내러티브에서 다음에 무슨 일이 일어날 것인가라는 질문에 머무르는 경향이 있다. 이 강연에서는 서스펜스가 분위기 있는(atmospheric) 세계와 관객의 몰입감 있는 만남을 표시할 때 그것이 어떻게 일어나고 있는지에 대해 더 신중하게 생각할 필요가 있음을. [서스펜스의 재탄생]은 주로 분위기의 형태, 감각, 관객 경험의 관점에서 영화적 서스펜스에 대한 확장된 이론을 개괄한다. 이를 통해 이 책은 대중 영화와 아트하우스 영화 사이의 가교 역할을 하는 서스펜스의 수정된 형태를 제시하며 서스펜스를 무드, 느낌, 리듬, 지각의 문제로 확장한다. 이를 개괄한 후 이 강연은 첩보 스릴러와 편집증적 음모 스릴러의 관습을 모호하게 차용한 느린 속도의 예술영화인 알베르 세라의 <퍼시픽션>(2022)을 다룬다. 이를 통해 이 강연은 지루함과 경이로움이라는 경쟁적인 미학적 모드에 국한되지 않는 슬로우 시네마의 특정 사례가 어떻게 불안과 부정적인 감정을 불러일으키며 주류 장르와의 하이브리드 관계를 형성하는가를 설명한다.

Approaches to suspense in film and media studies have tended to reach no further than plot and character, dwelling on the question: what will happen next in the narrative? This talk proposes that we need to think more carefully about how suspense is happening right now as it marks the spectator’s immersive encounter with an atmospheric world. Warner sketches out an expanded theory of cinematic suspense, primarily from the standpoint of atmospheric form, sensation, and spectator experience. He offers a revised morphology of suspense that bridges between popular cinema and arthouse films, extending into matters of mood, feeling, rhythm, and perception. The talk then turns to Albert Serra’s Pacifiction (2022), a slow-paced art film that ambiguously draws on conventions of the espionage thriller and the paranoid conspiracy thriller. In so doing, it explains how certain examples of slow cinema, far from being limited to the competing aesthetic modes of boredom and wonder, stoke anxiety and traffic in negative affects, doing so as they forge hybrid relationships with mainstream genres.

Quarterly Review of Film & Video, New Review of Film & Television Studies, Adaptation, Critical Inquiry 등의 저널에 논문을 게재했으며, 포착 매체(capture medium)로서의 사진화학적 필름이 존속하는 방식을 탐구하는 새로운 책을 작업 중이다.

Rick Warner is Bowman and Gordon Gray Distinguished Term Professor and Director of Film Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the author of Godard and the Essay: A Form That Thinks (2018) and The Rebirth of Suspense: Slowness and Atmosphere in Cinema (2024). His writings have appeared in several edited collections and in the journals Quarterly Review of Film & Video, New Review of Film & Television Studies, Adaptation, and Critical Inquiry, amongst many. He is currently at work on a new book that examines the persistence of photochemical film as a capture medium.
