1986년 나는 논문 “어트랙션 영화(The Cinema of Attractions)”를 출간햇고 이 개념을 계속 발전시켜왔다. 이 가영ㄴ에서 나는 이 용어를 역사적, 이론적으로 정의하면서 내 작업에서 이 용어가 어떻게 생겨났고 현재 이를 어떻게 생각하는가를 설명한다. 먼저 어트랙션과 초기영화(1890년대부터 1907년까지)의 관계를 논의하고 서사 개념과의 차별화 및 연관성 또한 다룬다. 러시아 형식주의의 ‘지배소(Dominant)’ 개념을 활용해 서사와 어트랙션의 상관관계를 논의한다. 이어 어트랙션이 서사영화 장르, 그리고 와이드스크린 및 3D 같은 영화 상영 형식과 맺는 관계를 다룰 것이다. 여행기 영화와 만화 같은 비주류 장르와의 관계, 틱톡과 유튜브 새로운 플랫폼과의 관계도 언급할 예정이다. 어트랙션과 아방가르드 영화와의 관계, 그리고 시적 영화 양식과의 연관성이 마지막 주제로 다뤄질 것이다.

In 1986 I published the essay “The Cinema of Attractions” and have continued to develop this concept. In this talk, I define the term both historically and theoretically and describe how it emerged in my work and how I now think about it. I first discuss its relation to the period of early cinema (1890’s to 1907) and then discuss both its differentiation and relation to concepts of narrative. I discuss how narrative and attractions interrelate using the Russian Formalist concept of the Dominant. I will engage attractions’ relation to both narrative genres and to forms of cinematic presentation such wide-screen and 3-D. Attractions’ relation to non-mainstream genres such as travelogues or cartoons, its relation to the new platforms of TikTok and YouTube will also be touched on. The relation of attractions to the avant-garde cinema, as well its relation to a poetic mode of cinema will form a final topic.

톰 거닝은 시카고대학교 영화-미디어학과 명예교수이다. 저서로 『D.W. 그리피스와 미국 서사영화의 기원』 (일리노이대 출판부, 1986), 『프리츠 랑과 영화: 시각과 현대성의 알레고리』 (British Film Institute, 2000)가 있으며, 200편의 논문을 발표했다. 2009년 앤드루 A 멜론 공로상을 수상했으며, 2010년 미국 예술과학아카데미 회원으로 선출되었다. 논문집 『무빙이미지의 매혹: 역사, 이론, 아방가르드에 대한 논문』은 2025년 시카고대학교 출판부에서 출간되었다.

Tom Gunning is Professor Emeritus in the Department on Cinema and Media at the University of Chicago. He is the author of D.W. Griffith and the Origins of American Narrative Film (University of Illinois Press, 1986) and The Films of Fritz Lang; Allegories of Vision and Modernity  (British Film Institute, 2000), and two hundred articles. In 2009 he was awarded an Andrew A. Mellon Distinguished Achievement Award and in 2010 was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. An anthology of essays, The Attraction of the Moving Image: Essays on History, Theory, and the Avant-Garde, was published by the University of Chicago Press in 2025.
