Jihoon Kim, Director of the CAU Center for Cinema and Media Studies (CCMS), has published a new article in JCMS: Journal of Cinema and Media Studies.

Featured in Volume 64, Issue 3, the article “Fabulations of Light: Speculative Operations in Sunstone and All Light, Everywhere” is part of the journal’s In-Focus section, Sci-Fi Doc: Intersections of Speculative and Non-fiction Media (eds. Benjamín Schultz-Figueroa and Leo Goldsmith).

In this piece, Professor Kim employs the concept of “speculative operation” to investigate the epistemological, aesthetic, technical, and media-archaeological strategies of the experimental essay films Sunstone (Filipa César and Louis Henderson, 2017) and All Light, Everywhere (Theo Anthony, 2021). These works explore the mechanics of optics, perception, and power, spanning from photographic media to computational media.

Furthermore, this issue of JCMS features a book review by Professor HyeJean Chung (Kyung Hee University, an external advisory member of the Center) on Director Ji-hoon Kim’s latest monograph, Activism and Post-activism: Korean Documentary Cinema, 1981-2022 (Oxford University Press, 2024). This book marks the first English-language single-authored study to explore the history, aesthetics, and politics of non-governmental and non-corporate Korean documentary cinema.
